VK TIP 119 : Celebrating BASANT PANCHAMI, blessings from MAA SARASWATI for knowledge and wisdom

Today celebrating BASANT/VASANT PANCHAMI
BASANT means Spring season in hindi. Panchami means 5th day. Today its the 5th day of Hindu lunar calendar Magha, celebrated as onset of Spring and harvest season. It is a day celebrated with wearing yellow clothes and flying kites. This is to match with the yellow ripening flowers and fields of mustard crops.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh, King of Sikh empire, also encouraged celebration of Basant Panchami through donations in Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar, for distribution of foods.
On this day, women wear yellow dresses, prepare yellow sweets, make saffron rice offer yellow flowers to Maa Saraswati. She is especially worshipped on this day with performance of Saraswati Puja.
This day is also remembered for love. It is believed that Maa Parvati approached God of love Kama to wake up Lord Shiva from his Yogic meditation.Lord kama helps her by shooting arrows of flowers and bees to awaken Lord Shiva.
Maa Saraswati is the Hindu Goddess, blessing knowledge and wisdom, music, arts and language.
Goddess Saraswati is depicted as wearing a white saree and mostly seated on a white lotus. In this form she symbolises knowledge, truth and light. She holds a book of Vedas in her hand which represents her divine, eternal, true knowledge and all forms of learning.
She is also known as Veena Vadini, she holds and plays the musical instrument Veena.
She is the energy of Lord Brahma, symbolising creative energy and power in her this form.
SARASWATI VANDANA
Chanting in her praise and seeking her blessings is known as SARASWATI VANDANA. This helps to remove ignorance and gain knowledge.
या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता
या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना ।
या ब्रह्माच्युतशंकरप्रभृतिभिर्देवैः सदा पूजिता
सा मां पातु सरस्वति भगवती निःशेषजाड्यापहा ॥१॥
“Yaa Kundendu tushaara haaradhavalaa, Yaa shubhravastraavritha
Yaa veenavara dandamanditakara, aa shwetha padmaasana |
Yaa brahmaachyutha shankara, prabhritibhir Devaisadaa Vanditha
Saa Maam Paatu Saraswatee Bhagavatee Nihshesha jaadyaapahaa ||”
It is praising Maa Saraswati for her fair complexion, like jasmine- coloured moon, her pure white garland like frosty dew drops. She wears radiant white attire, on her beautiful arm rests the veena, a white lotus as her throne. She is surrounded and respected by Gods. My prayers to Maa Saraswati to protect me, remove my weariness, sluggishness and ignorance.
This prayer to Maa Saraswati can be done by any student or a person seeking to increase knowledge or wisdom, right from a musician to artist to scientist or any person in any field.
