VK TIP 120 : MAHA SHIVARATRI, Blessings of Spiritual awakening and Worldly Joys from LORD SHIVA

GOLDEN SUNRISE DIVINE SOULS

Today on 13th night of lunar month Magha/Falgun, we celebrate MAHA SHIVARATRI, the Great night of Lord Shiva.

There is Shivaratri on every 13th night of Hindu lunar calendar. But this day/night is celebrated as Maha Shivaratri.

 Lord Shiva is a Hindu God, known as "Destroyer", being one among the Trinity with Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Lord Shiva is the destroyer of darkness and ignorance. He is the creator and protector of the Universe. He is the Supreme Lord, who transforms the Universe to light.

Some believe Lord Shiva is formless, limitless, transcendent and unchanging absolute Brahman, and the sole Atman (soul, self) of the universe. Some believe and pray him as Mahadeva, Neelkantha, Bhairava, Umapati, Ardhanarishwara, Nataraja, Shambhu, Mahayogi, Shankara.

 Maha Shivaratri is celebrated at night praying and meditating on Lord Shiva.

It is believed that on this night, Lord Shiva drank the poisonous negativity, the pot of poison which emerged from the ocean in process of Samudra Manthan, to save the world. It is also believed that on this night, Lord Shiva performed the heavenly Cosmic dance, TANDAVA, in creation, preservation and Destruction. Another belief is that on this day, Lord Shiva married Maa Parvati, marking the convergence of Shiva and Shakti.

Another belief is that Lord Shiva also known as Adiyogi, the 1st Guru, awakens his consciousness to a material level of existence. He meditates to reach a Shoonya or zero level or voidness. This night is of great significance for a person who seeks spirituality. It is believed to be a night of awakening of the soul from vastness to emptiness.

 Mahashivaratri is celebrated by offering water, milk, dhatura, Beal leaves and flowers to Lord Shiva. Devotees observe fast, chant mantras, all night vigils and prayer ceremonies are held with reading of Shiva scriptures.

It is celebrated with great enthusiasm at 12 Jyotirling temples in India and at Pashupatinath temple at Nepal. You can follow this VK Tip 86, and send your offerings to any or all Jyotirlings in a simple way through Divine VK.

It is powerful time for prayers, prayer fulfilment, spiritual awakening. One can pray to receiving blessings of material or worldly joy or spiritual wisdom. Women also pray to be blessed with a good husband and a happy married life.

It is a day to give Gratitude to Lord Shiva and seek his blessings for self realisation.

 The planetary positions in the Northern hemisphere favour to help a person raise his or her spiritual energy more easily. The benefits of powerful ancient mantras such as Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or OM NAMAHA SHIVAY increase multifold on this night.

 OM NAMAH SHIVAYA MANTRA or PANCHAKSHARI MANTRA

ॐ नमः शिवाय
OM NAMAH SHIVAYA

This mantra is a popular and powerful mantra. It is known since thousands of years. It is mentioned in Yajurveda in the Shri Rudram hymn.
Namah means salutations. Namah Shivay means Salutation to the most auspicious one. It means I BOW DOWN TO SHIVA. This mantra is chanted in devotion expressing salutation to Lord Shiva. Shiva is the ultimate God, so this mantra becomes the essence of all mantras, vedas and prayers.

It also portrays the oneness of 5 elements in Lord Shiva

Na sound represents Earth, (bones and flesh in human body)
Ma sound represents Water (blood, plasma , water in human body)
ŚI sound represents Fire (digestive juices in human body)
Vā sound represents Pranic Air (breathing in human body)
Ya sound represents Sky or Ether (human mind)

So it becomes "UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS IS ONE". Namah Shivaya is in every human body. So it also means I bow down to my inner self. Chanting of this mantra creates this consciousness of being one with Lord Shiva.

OM signifies the first vibration from the creation of Universe. Before this , there was only emptiness or voidness. So any mantra can be started with OM as a prefix to connect to the beginning of the Universe. OM chanting also has many other benefits.

 OM NAMAH SHIVAY, when chanted slowly or within the mind, it helps to draw the mind upon itself to Lord Shiva’s infinite, all-pervasive presence. It is the calling upon the higher self; it is the calling upon Shiva.

It is a prayer of being with divine-love, grace, truthfulness, and blissfulness of Lord Shiva. It can be chanted without rituals and no restrictions, but with full devotion. It can be done with imagining to connect with inner self or in meditative mode.

Slow chanting of this mantra gives inner peace, energy and focus. It removes toxic emotions like ego, aggression, stress. It can be chanted otherwise or even while in meditation. It brings happiness to the body and peace to the soul. It removes the fear of death, instils hope and faith, raises a person from illness to wellness, enhances right decision making ability, helps to fulfil desires, helps in spiritual awakening.
