TULSI VIVAH begins today on Kartik Ekadashi and continues till Kartik Poornima.
It is believed that Tulsi is an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, adored to Lord Vishnu.
In puranas, there is a mention ....that Tulsi Plant was a woman with name VRINDA, married to Demon King Jalandhar. Due to her piety and devotion to Lord Vishnu, it became difficult to defeat Jalandhar. Lord Vishnu disguished himself as Jalandhar and appeared before Vrinda. Her chastity was destroyed and Jalandhar lost his power. Lord Shiva defeated him. Vrinda cursed Lord Vishnu to be black and separated from his wife. Vishnu was transformed into a black stone/fossil as Shaligram. Vishnu in his incarnation of Lord Rama got separated from Devi Sita.
In Hindu tradition, it is considered to be auspicious day and a wedding ceremony is performed on these days between Tulsi Plant and Shaligram.
It is believed that Vrinda resides in this plant at night and leaves next day.
